PSL STATS: Five Records Sundowns can target on the final day

Sundowns go into the final day of the season looking to become the first ever side to finish a season without a defeat. They host Cape Town City on Saturday afternoon, and can secure that record if they avoid defeat on the day. Besides that, there are more records at stake on the day which makes it an exciting moment (at least for Sundowns fans). Here are five records they can still target.

  1. Most points (75 – Sundowns on 73)

The shining target in distance that everyone can see and is talking about is the points total. Downs have already exceeded the 71-point record for a 30-game season, but now need three points to set a new all-time record (75 points). These were previously done in 34-game seasons.

  1. Most wins (23 – Sundowns on 22)

Another less-talked-about target, but the foundation of a record-breaking season is the number of wins. 23 wins has been done only once before in the PSL era, and that was by Sundowns in the 2015/16 season. One more win will set a new record.

3. Fewest goals conceded (11 – Sundowns on 10)

For 20 years, the paragon of defensive solidity has been the 2003/04 Kaizer Chiefs side that conceded 11 goals in an entire season. That team conceded more goals in their final six games (6) than they did in the first 24 (5). Downs need a clean sheet on Saturday to set a new record.

4. Clean sheets (21 – Sundowns on 20)

In the same vein, the clean sheet record is well within reach. The same 11-goal conceding Chiefs kept a remarkable 21 clean sheets, a total Sundowns can match with a clean sheet at home to Cape Town City.

5. Biggest points gap between 1st and 2nd

20+ – With 23 points between them & second going into the final day, Sundowns will set a new record for points gap between 1st & 2nd at the end of a PSL season, breaking the 16-point record they set in each of the last two campaigns. That will end up as 20, 22, 24, 26 points depending on results.

PSL STATS: TS Galaxy v Sundowns

Sundowns needed a late goal from Peter Shalulile to grab a 1-1 draw away to TS Galaxy. The result meant they maintained their unbeaten run this season, and are one game away from an unprecedented invincible season. Here are 5 stats from the midweek PSL action:

Shaluliile the thorn

8 – Peter Shalulile has scored eight goals for Sundowns in eight league appearances v TS Galaxy – his outright most against a single opponent in the competition for The Brazilians.

Downs fall short

A win against TS Galaxy would have been their ninth double of the season, and a new PSL record.

8 – Sundowns will end the season on eight league doubles. No team has won more than eight doubles in the same PSL season:

8 – 1996/97 Manning Rangers
8 – 2015/16 Sundowns
8 – 2023/24 Sundowns.

TS Galaxy’s fortress

33 – Only Sundowns (36) have won more points in home matches than TS Galaxy’s 33 this season (P15 W10 D3 L2).

You can almost bank on Galaxy to score

14/15 – TS Galaxy have scored at least once in 14 home games this season, the joint-most of all #dstvprem teams (level with Sundowns).

Weirdly, they have more blanks away from home than any other side (10).

Sundowns invincible on the road at least

1 – Sundowns will end the season unbeaten away from home in the league (W11 D4); only the second time a side has gone unbeaten on the road across an entire PSL campaign (also 2020/21 Sundowns).

PSL STATS: Sundowns near PSL record

Sundowns beat Royal AM 2-0 on Tuesday night, taking a step closer to a major PSL record. The win took Downs to 69 points with three games remaining. That leaves them just two points off the 71-point record set by Pitso Mosimane’s 2015/16 Sundowns team. Here are 5 stats from the action.

7 – Sundowns won home & away v Royal AM, their seventh league double of the season. Only 1996/97 Manning Rangers and 2015/16 Sundowns have completed more doubles in the same PSL campaign (both 8).

Sundowns can get nine.

69 – 69 points from 27 games is a new record at this stage of a PSL season. Indeed, no team has ever won more than 65 points after 27 games.

The 30-game points record is 71, while the overall PSL record s 75 points.

50 – Sundowns now have 50 league goals this season, just the 8th time a team gets 50+ in a PSL campaign since 2010.

51 – Sundowns are now unbeaten in 51 league games, extending the PSL unbeaten record they first set in September last year.

100% – Peter Shalulile has scored at least once in every game he’s played v Royal AM (7 goals in 5 appearances), the only opponent against whom he enjoys a 100% scoring record in the league.
